Saturday was a good day for carspotting. The generally less tasteful stuff I have already documented here including a Vanderhall Venice and a few donked Rolls Royces.

Just a relatively straight manual Fox Body Mustang down on the street.
Great color on this one. The two tone with the original color showing below is maybe a little tacky and hasn’t stood up to parking taps particularly well.
This is the first Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback I’ve seen in a long time. They are shockingly uncommon.
Speaking of uncommon, I have seen more of the mythical Hyundai Elantra coupe in a month here in Atlanta than I have seen anywhere else.
Speaking of small and quirky, what is this car? I just can’t place it and it is driving me crazy.
That is one menacing looking short bus.
You know when you see a car you hadn’t realized was all that old with absolutely trashed paint and showing clear signs of age and neglect? That’s starting to happen with cars from the early 2010s and I’m not sure I like that.
I always thought this generation of Suburban/Tahoe was pretty sharp looking but this is the first one I’ve seen with trashed clearcoat. This is definitely a first for me.
Also, notice that kwality bumper repair on the outback behind it. A+ duct tape skillz deployed there.

ATL, like a lot of other large cities, is great for car spotting.

Is that red/pink one a Toyota Echo?

This was DOTS round 3 from that day. I’ve spotted some pretty crazy stuff but all the classics escape getting captured by my camera that day. There was one Fintail going faster than you would expect with a high speed overtake on North Ave that I didn’t quite catch.
Then have crap like this:
And there was the Vanderhall. I’ve seen better in a day but there were lots of small spots. Like that Elantra coupe and the S portback. It’s rare for a longish walk not to produce its own DOTS post.

No, not a Toyota and definitely not an Echo. Everyone else is saying Suzuki Aerio but I thought those were hatch only. Weird.

Woah, had no idea these came as a sedan. Even the hatches are pretty rare.
And isn’t this an early one before the facelift? I kind of like this front better. These are pretty uncommon over here as AWD isn’t terribly useful

I had no idea they came as a sedan and I never see the pre facelift ones around. Weird.

They’re right and I’m wrong. It’s an Aerio. Some quick googling showed me the error of my ways.

I didn’t even know those came as a sedan! Why they did I have no idea. It’s a much smaller car than I thought when you lop off the hatch.

Because Americans would not buy hatchbacks. I have no idea why as they are supremely practical.

I can’t imagine there are very many of them left on the road... I don’t think I’ve seen one in years

This one appears to have once been red and then eaten another Aerio sedan that was a little more red. I bet getting those body panels was quite a challenge. These were never common but I feel like I see less and less of them every year. Suzuki was once quite popular here but the Aerio didn’t make much sense as AWD isn’t terribly useful.

Well the Aerio was one car they actually did want the hatch on. I didn’t even know the sedan existed!

If the clearcoat is peeling on a 10 years old vehicle that is not living on the desert it’s not neglect but a terrible paint job .

Never knew these came as anything other than a hatchback (which is vastly better looking). No idea why anyone bought one over a Forenza but the proportions on it are kinda weird being a subcompact sedan.

I don’t know about that. The Southeast US is infamous for roasting paint almost as badly as the desert. I’ve seen plenty of sub 10 year paintjobs get decimated by the sun but it’s way less common than it used to be. I’d guess someone washed this Chevy Suburban with dish washing liquid quite a few times and always parked it outside away from the sun.
My 2012 has significant sun damage on the plastics and considering how much time it has spent outside it was weathered it better than a lot of other cars. The clearcoat is still fine and it was probably built at around the same time as this Suburban. It’s rare to see even previous gen GM trucks with terrible clearcoat like that so I think this might just be owner’s error.

First time i hear of anybody who would cle an their car with dishwashing liquid, seems a bit of a strange idea.
There are also some cars that are known to have a bad factory clearcoat.

You’d be shocked how many people see no problem with that. It’s far too harsh to use on car paint but people still do it. Honestly at that point a healthy layer of road grime a few years dep is better than sustained dish washing liquid washes.
The Suburban is not a car known for bad factory clearcoat. Even ones from the 2000s usually don’t have issues.
It’s not usually the paint and clearcoat on modern cars that loses the battle with the sun before 10 years have elapsed. Interior and exterior rubbers in particular have a tough time of it. Steering wheels usually have some UV scarring on the top surface if they are kept outside. And exterior plastics can quickly get out of hand even at few years old if they are never treated. Horizontal surfaces on headlight plastics can cloud in as little as 5 years depending on how well the manufacturer has treated them.
On my Cruze I have a few sun related issues. The finish is coming off some of the switchgear like the turn signal stalk for instance even with me using a sunshade. That’s not all that unusual considering I think the prior owner didn’t take such precautions. The exterior chromed plastic trim is absolutely roasted but I haven’t made any attempt to bring it back like I should have. And I have fought with the headlights and the sun damage is still evident. It’s held up to the sun better than a lot of cheap cars its age would have in the same conditions (most have an easier life of more shade).
